I Done Lost My Mind and Cut My Hair

(This is clickbait since Wix uses the first image you put in the blog post as the cover image 😂, back from when my hair was nice and long and pretty on April 28th. I had just washed my hair the night before and that night it curled in ringlets and looked NICE. My hair has not looked that nice since.)
May 23rd, 2020. Better known as the day I finally snapped and asked my mom to cut my hair, instead of going to my hair salon that's reopening on Monday the 25th.
I live in a state that's technically in a State of Emergency. Everything is closed and/or cancelled until after Labor Day. I don't even know if we have phases of opening (we probably do but I'm just so untethered from reality I have no idea when/what they are). So when I got the email that my hair salon was opening – I almost scheduled an appointment.
But then I remembered, we're not going anywhere during this time. Who's gonna see my new hair cut/new keratin treatment? If I post it on social media, people are going to (rightfully) scold me for not taking proper social distancing measures. And why spend all that money if I'm just going to be spending all my days inside?
So I told my mother I wanted a haircut and she said no. The last time she cut my hair, it was a bit choppy and uneven and a lot shorter than I wanted it to be. This was two years ago, back in the summer of 2018 right before I went abroad to London. I gave her grief about it and she swore to never cut my hair again. Almost two years later, as my hair had become just as long and damaged, I got it into my head somehow that I needed a trim/a shorter cut. And once I got that into my head, every time I took a shower and washed my hair, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
So earlier this week, I told my mother that since she wouldn't do it – I would. I watched a few youtube videos, including Brad Mondo's Guide to Cutting Your Hair and Not Ruining It. My favorite comment on his video was:

I also watched Sharee Anonuevo's video on how to cut your hair short and straight, and loved Safiya Nygaard's video of her following Sharee's tutorial. But I knew my curly, wavy hair was going to be a hassle to do by myself – especially because I left my straightener back at my apartment and I'm home for the time being.
So I recruited my mom to help me. I washed my hair, blasting Rain on Me by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, and then showed my mom where I wanted her to cut my hair to.

Like my Camp Half-Blood t-shirt? And completely wet mirror?
(To be honest, I had no intention of making a blog post about this – hence the wet mirror and terrible selfie pose – but then I figured what's the point of having a blog if you don't document all of your fuck-ups and bad decisions?)
As you can imagine ... I did not love the end result. It's a lot shorter than I originally wanted and because it's been about 4 months since I got my last keratin treatment, my hair is curlier and frizzier, especially now that it's summer. So my hair is pretty short.

But thank God for quarantine, huh!? Most likely we're all going to be cooped up inside, only seeing our family/closest relatives and neighbors, for the next few months. And hopefully my hair will have grown out more by then.

I also purchased this brow grooming pen at Target this afternoon, after having seen it on Amazon multiple times and on Facebook ads. The brand is Finishing Touch Flawless, and they have hair removal pens for your cheeks, lips, and peach fuzz. It's as if social media knew how atrocious my brows had become. The videos make it look super simple, the pen just glides over the skin above your eyebrow and the hair removal is painless and easy.
It comes with a battery, a brush for cleaning the pen, and helpful instructions. In bold, you'll notice that they are basically suggesting your first time will not be as smooth as you expect it to be, but overtime the results will improve. The instructions advise washing and drying your face completely, without putting on creams or make-up. In full transparency, I had washed my face in the shower and put on a light moisturizer afterwards before I read the instructions and did not wash my face again. (Blogs are for documenting all your bad decisions, right?)

The instructions also recommend using the pen in a circular motion. So I did. At first it didn't seem like I was actually removing any hair and I was wondering if it was because I had put on moisturizer. Then when I actually examined my progress, I noticed my (right) brow was cleaner and a bit thinner. Also more bad decisions confession time – I have terrible eyesight and wear glasses (as pictured above). I also left my contacts at my apartment and have to rely on my glasses, which I couldn't wear while using this product.
So the end result isn't perfect by any means. It was also a little difficult to "trim" my left eyebrow, considering I'm right-handed and it was awkward to find an angle where I could see my face in the mirror while using my right hand with the product. But the product, true to its word, was painless and effective. Take a look!

With time, I believe they'll look better and I'll find an easier way to trim the left eyebrow with either my left hand, or continue using my right hand. So for now – in a time where we can't visit our beloved threading and waxing salons – I would definitely recommend this product. You can order it from their website for $19.99 and free shipping (most likely to places in the US): https://www.finishingtouchflawless.com. I bought it from Target for $20 plus tax. Of course, it's also available on Amazon but support small businesses and let's not continue putting money in Jeff Bezos' wallet!
Anyways, I feel like since I cut my hair and now look like a boy, this will speed up quarantine. A cure/vaccine will be found. The second wave will not happen. The world will reopen in time for the Fourth of July. Oh, we love delusions.
Hope this convinces you to either go ahead and cut your hair, or save your split ends for a professional! Stay safe everyone. X
